It is now an awesome, quick resource for my small groups

I am a first grade teacher. I made a book out of this using clear sheet protectors. Then I cut out and laminated all the pieces and placed them inside an envelope with their page. It is now an awesome, quick resource for my small groups!

Useful and fun word sorts, well explained.

With the current literacy focus on fundamentals of language instruction, the advantage of these activities lies in allowing every child to progress at their own pace and master the skill described in each game. As long as the teacher or tutor pays attention to how automatically any sort is done, and if not, why not, the level of interest and the point of the exercise can keep children moving along rapidly. Teach procedures for each activity, maintain high expectations for taking out and putting away the sorts, and they will become an excellent tool. In other words, using the book without gluing down the components is a much better approach, since if the child is gluing them down, you have no idea how well they learned the rule of the sort, or how long it took them to get to what looks like a correct sort, so you can't monitor progress. Do the sort over and over until it's automatic, and then move on fast! Oh, and be sure you can name all the pictures so you can help the child - some are not obvious!
As long as you choose the level that matches the child's needs, I don't think there is another series out there that gives as much useful, simple, manageable practice as this one. You might want to try the online activities too, for which you need a license number from Pearson, but if you/your kids use computers a lot, it could be worth it.
