A Bit Dated, but Imaginative and Informative

Too many books for laypeople about the ancient world seem dry, stiff, and dusty. They don't breathe and pulse with the lives, the ideas, the clothes and faces and emotions of the people they discuss; that's not their mission. But that is the mission of Geoffrey Bibby's 4000 Years Ago, at which the book succeeds admirably.
Through a combination of soft focus and detail, 4000 Years Ago gives the reader an impressive photo album of what it would have been like to live in the Bronze Age. Mr. Bibby organized his book in periods of 70 years, to give one an idea of what an average human might have seen happen in their one lifetime, and picked a different area for each chapter, so as to give on an idea of the diversity of the Bronze Age world. His vivid word-pictures (children playing in the sun on a ziggurat, a small and dusty tavern in occupied Egypt) give one the concrete pictures of life as it was lived that dry history books often lack.
Of course, nothing's perfect. This book was written a couple of decades ago, and so is a bit out of date in certain respects, and there are times when Mr. Bibby has had to choose one theory over another to keep his narrative coherent. If one is a serious amateur student of history this book will probably give tell one much new information; the greatest value of this book is in bringing the piles of information we have together into bright images of how people actually lived, and so in stimulating the imagination and helping one transport oneself back into the past. For these purposes, it is valuable indeed.

Gateway to the Bronze Age

A great introduction to the world of the Bronze Age for the layperson. Keep in mind that a lot has been learned since 1961, and some of the scholarship is dated -- but in fact Bibby was ahead of the curve in envisioning the transcontinental web of trade and diplomacy that scholars are only now fleshing out.
This book is like "A Night at the Museum": it's as though Bibby has constructed 22 dioramas spanning the world of the second millennium BCE -- each one representing a single generation in a particular region of interest -- and brought them all to life. From the building of Stonehenge to the Shang dynasty, from the coastal villages of Peru to the sack of Troy, from the Sudanese revolt to Saul against the Philistines, it's all here.
It's sure to leave you wanting to know more about this fascinating period.

2000 BC brought to life for the modern reader

This is a worldwide panoramic view of life around 2000 BC. It is well done with the general educated reader in mind. Not every writer could have managed such a task. I read it with interest in 1967.
