Great book! I have had various discussions recently on colorism and its impact, that's why I was particularly drawn to this. But no matter how many discussions you have about something, sometimes it is hard to emphasize. So it was interesting reading this narrative, because I felt like I was actually in Emma Lou's shoes, giving me an expanded perspective. Definitely recommend it !

This book has to be one of the best and unfortunately, least acknowledged, of the Harlem Renaissance. Although published in 1929 it is relevant in the 21st century. The one thing most Black people can't veil is the color of their skin and this story makes that very clear. But beyond that it's about love, rejection, sacrifice and choices. I very highly recommend it.
