Excellent as a broadly scoped reference book
By J. F. Woods
This book is tremendously broad in its coverage of planning topics, though not in depth. Most topics get only 2 pages, though some get 4-5. References are listed for each topic to help you find more detailed information. The book is well organized and indexed. It's loaded with illustrations such as graphs, diagrams, flow charts, line art, photographs, and maps. Most are black and white, but there are 16 color plates that are grouped together and stuck in a seemingly arbitrary position in the middle of an unrelated topic.

Some information is already out of date. For example, on page 580 it says that the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) expired in 2003 and Congress was still debating reauthorization. The new act (SAFETEA-LU) was enacted in August 2005 and is not mentioned.

My only real complaint is that the type is quite small and can be difficult to read for 40+ year-old readers. On the other hand, I understand that if they used larger type this huge, heavy book would be even bigger and heavier.

I also got the electronic, online version of the book and was disappointed in that, again because of the small type. Even using a 20" monitor I had a very hard time reading it. The viewer application that Amazon uses has very limited capability to zoom in on the text so it does not help.

A public sector must-have resource
By Adam Lenhard
An excellent resource for anyone involved in public sector land-use planning. Contains great detail on many different subjects. Good illustrations throughout. Not the best resource for site planning, though.

Mandatory
By Vicente F. de Castro Neto
This is a mandatory book in an urban planner or college bookshelf, for it has all the necessary information to complete urban projects. It is my handbook and that says all. It is also very well presented with a hardcover in good leather. The only shortcoming that I see is the absence of folded pages with urban plans in a larger scale, or renderings of zoning plans.

The Libyan, by Esther Kofod

THE LIBYAN is unforgettable storytelling, told with raw honesty and an eye for detail. This stunning memoir sweeps four continents and several decades, from colonial Singapore through Europe and the United States, to Libya. A poignant saga of historical and cultural wealth, it transports the reader on an exciting journey of passion, terror and betrayal, chronicling a slice of Libya during the early years of Gaddafi's dictatorship.
A memoir told by Esther Kofod, a worldly Eurasian girl from Singapore who meets Kamal, a Libyan graduate student, in Washington D.C. Their fated union, against all odds and cultural barriers, is the basis of this powerful tale of love and desire, idealism and obsession. From the exciting cosmopolitan world of the American capital and the tranquility of a southern town, Esther and Kamal leave to begin a new life in the enigmatic North African nation of Libya.
The loving welcome awaiting Esther in Libya surpasses all her hopes of being accepted by a devoted and fiercely loyal family. Her account of life in a traditional setting is exquisitely and vividly described in intimate detail, offering a rare look into the Libyan culture. Unwittingly, Esther has also stepped into a world of random arrests and public hangings, into a country mangled by power and greed. Her husband's dream of developing Libya into a model Arab nation is instead replaced by the whims and biddings of an irrational dictator. As Gaddafi transformed the richest nation in Africa into the most repressed and brutalized country in the Arab world, Kamal struggles to survive politically, but soon becomes a target of the dreaded secret police.
Forced to run for his life from his beloved Libya, the harrowing escape of Esther and her children provides one of several heart pounding scenes in this fast paced drama. After his return to Florida, Kamal is hunted by rogue CIA and Libyan agents sent by Gaddafi's thugs to eliminate "stray dogs". In his obsession to overthrow his one-time hero, Kamal joins a group of elite Libyan dissidents to help establish an opposition party, the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. However, he soon realizes that he is faced with another enemy...himself.
A memorable book with a surprise ending, THE LIBYAN provides a rare look into an obscure culture and a young mother's journey of love into a chaotic world of political intrigue.

"Kofod is a brilliant observer of detail and perceptive in her descriptions of character... Her love for Libya is evident and she presented a vivid account of its modern history through the eyes of Lina and Kamal."
-Libya TV (English)

"The Libyan offers a unique perspective on living under one of the worst dictatorships of the 20th century...Kofod fluently weaves a tale of romance with her own observations of Libya to produce this gripping novel."
-Tripoli Post, Libya

"Ms. Kofod has a strong voice and a heck of a story which she tells with integrity and feeling."
-Ethan Chorin, Author
Translating Libya

"The story never strays from its sharp edge... This is a good read. Fast paced in style, exciting in drama, and sweeping in time and geography"
-C. Peter Ripley, History Professor EmeritusAuthor, Conversations With Cuba

The Libyan
By Nadia Hamarneh-Hall
Extremely well written , truthful, good read. Most of all kofod shows that no culture has monopoly on virtue, that good and evil exist in every nation. There is men that are blinded by extreme idolatry , power or money and the ones that honest,,loving . Men and woman that love their family and country, generous and hospitable.
I understand the fear and anxiety that Kofod suffered. In my youth I witness the brutality of leader that silence dissident . Regrettably this leader was supported morally and financially by the US. I salute Kofod .

Buy The Libyan. You will read it in one sitting
By peter ripley
Americans, wrote someone wise, learn about geography and foreign cultures from wars and international crises. So it has been with Libya during the half-mad, brutal dictatorship of Muammar Ghaddafi, until the publication of Esther Kofod's, The Libyan. Kofod's energetic novel is driven by her graceful writing and an appreciation for the human behavior that make for a good story--love, loyalty, betrayal, deceit, brutality, courage and a will to survive. Mona, the Singapore-born main character and narrator, joins Kamal, her Libyan husband, when he leaves America to return home and serve in Ghaddafi's government. Gradually, evenly, and with a good author's instinct for drama and detail, Kofod unfolds a personal crisis that destroys a family and a country in crisis that subdues and brutalizes its people. The story never strays from its sharp edge, is never far away from dramatic events that swirl around the family and the country with the force of a dust storm. When the unfaithful Kamal flees the country just in front of Ghaddafi's racing police to join the opposition in exile, Mona is left alone. Knowing her name is on Ghaddafi's blood-stained list of the disloyal, smothered with anxiety that she might be held hostage for her husbands return, fearful for her life and the safety of her young children, Mona is briefly powerless with fear. What follows is a John la Carre-style story of Mona, alternately plotting, smiling, demanding, and begging with her eyes to flee the country with her two children. In a nation that appeared to be reduced to two brands of people--the government torturers and the brutalized citizens--there appeared another model, those who extend the hand of humanity to Mona. Terrified servants, a highly place army general (who brings along an armed soldier, just in case) Libyan friends, a customs official who finds his mercy in the terrified eyes of a traitor's wife. This is a good read. Fast paced in style, exciting in drama, and sweeping in time and geography.

Love is a many splendid thing....
By Charles E. Moore
This book is not, as my wife sometimes calls what she reads, a "Potato chip." Certainly, it is a love story, and a passionate one at that, but made all the more elegant by being so straight forwardly expressed.
Its poignancy lies in the tension that exists when one lover, Lina, is in love with the other, and the other, Kamal, is in love with something else. How can the love of Lina compete with the love that obsesses Kamal elsewhere, even if it's as noble as a love for his country, Libya. We have here a kind of sequel to "Casablanca." How can Ingrid Bergman, a passionate woman, ultimately endure the passionate idealism of Paul Henreid, obsessed by the needs of his country and his role as its savior?
So also in THE LIBYAN: Lina loves with all the earthy love a woman can bring to her marriage, but Kamal is gradually overwhelmed by his passion to salvage his country from the grip of a dictator, and make it somehow whole, pure, and as perfect as his brilliant mind imagines.
Here is a book that tells us much about passion, love, ideals, hope, tragedy, cruelty, family, friends, and over coming. It is written in a spare style, which somehow makes all the more vivid the complexity of the issues it addresses. And in the end, after so much travail, we are granted the benison of forgiving, of moving on, remembering and forgetting, and yet still loving, all at the same time.
I enjoyed this book for many reasons, nor to leave out the insight the author grants us respecting Libya itself, as a wonderful country little known to most readers, and only lately catapulted into our cognizance by the overthrow of Ghaddafi. Read it, and you will want to go there...in a quieter time, of course!
Read it, and learn something of love that speaks not only of its beauty, but also its paradoxical power to destroy.

Elementary and Middle School Social Studies: An Interdisciplinary, Multicultural Approach, by Pamela J. Farris

In its latest refinement, the Sixth Edition of Professor Farris's widely assigned, well-priced core textbook for pre- and in-service social studies teachers continues its twenty-year record for balanced, accessible, timely, creative, and strategy-filled coverage. Farris, along with experts in the core disciplines of social studies, offers a variety of proven multicultural, diverse, and interdisciplinary techniques that are sensitive to the needs of all elementary and middle school learners.

As always, the presentation of concepts and objectives--attentively aligned to the most current NCSS Standards--remains user-friendly and pedagogically rich. Early chapters contain instructional strategies and processes (including assessment and evaluation), while later chapters focus on specific content areas and themes. A wealth of lesson plans and thematic units appear throughout the text, as well as suggestions for integrating literature for children and young adults.

In addition to updated examples drawn from current events, refreshed annotated literature lists, and revised technology and Internet resources, the latest edition includes discussions of Common Core State Standards for Social Studies and Response to Intervention (RtI). One of the primary goals of a quality social studies curriculum is to equip students with problem-solving and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to integrate these skills into a framework for being responsible citizens. The distinguished Farris text never loses sight of these goals.

Review
"I like the breadth and depth of this book's approach. I particularly appreciate the multicultural focus throughout, the chapter on the arts, and the terrific resources both from content areas as well as children's literature. Bravo." --Jonathan Silverman, St. Michael's College

"I was particularly impressed with the inclusion of NCSS standards-linked lesson plans and student-oriented strategies to help the classroom teacher or college instructor more clearly visualize the integration of social studies themes across the curriculum. . . . The Sixth Edition's content changes make this resource an invaluable tool for today's technology savvy, knowledge-hungry student and for our nation's educators charged with mentoring citizens who will lead our world in the 21st century." --Gilbert Duenas, Auburn University

"The text is well-organized, comprehensive, and easy to understand. It is especially valuable in its emphasis on the role and value of social studies within a diverse society." --John O'Kane, Roberts Wesleyan College

Class requirment

This book was required for a college course I took, but it is still a fantastic tool! It is one of the best textbooks I have used, and as a senior I have been through quite a few. It contains many ideas for interdisciplinary subjects in the classroom as well as many projects and activities to engage students in the classroom. I hope to use many ideas throughout my career.

About the Author
Alfred North Whitehead, who began his career as a mathematician, ranks as the foremost philosopher in the twentieth century to construct a speculative system of philosophical cosmology. After his graduation from Cambridge University, he lectured there until 1910 on mathematics. Like Bertrand Russell (see also Vol. 5), his most brilliant pupil, Whitehead viewed philosophy at the start from the standpoint of mathematics, and, with Russell, he wrote Principia Mathematica (1910--13). This work established the derivation of mathematics from logical foundations and has transformed the philosophical discipline of logic. From his work on mathematics and its logical foundations, Whitehead proceeded to what has been regarded as the second phase of his career. In 1910 he left Cambridge for the University of London, where he lectured until he was appointed professor of applied mathematics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology. During his period in London, Whitehead produced works on the epistemological and metaphysical principles of science. The major works of this period are An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge (1919), The Concept of Nature (1920), and The Principles of Relativity (1922). In 1924, at age 63, Whitehead retired from his position at the Imperial College and accepted an appointment as professor of philosophy at Harvard University, where he began his most creative period in speculative philosophy. In Science and the Modern World (1925) he explored the history of the development of science, examining its foundations in categories of philosophical import, and remarked that with the revolutions in biology and physics in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a revision of these categories was in order. Whitehead unveiled his proposals for a new list of categories supporting a comprehensive philosophical cosmology in Process and Reality (1929), a work hailed as the greatest expression of process philosophy and theology. Adventures of Ideas (1933) is an essay in the philosophy of culture; it centers on what Whitehead considered the key ideas that have shaped Western culture.

DOES MANKIND HAVE TO FIND A “SYMBOL” TO EXPRESS ITSELF?
By Steven H Propp
Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) was an English mathematician [he is credited as co-writer with Bertrand Russell of Principia Mathematica] and philosopher, best known for developing Process Philosophy. He wrote many other books such as Process and Reality, Modes of Thought, Religion in the Making, etc.

He begins this 1927 book with the statement, “The slightest survey of different epochs of civilization discloses great differences in their attitude towards symbolism. For example, during the medieval period in Europe symbolism seemed to dominate men’s imaginations… With the Reformation a reaction set in. Men tried to dispense with symbols… But such symbolism is on the fringe of life. It has an unessential element in its constitution. The very fact that it can be acquired in one epoch and discarded in another epoch testifies to its superficial nature.” (Pg. 1)

He outlines, “I shall develop the thesis that symbolism is an essential factor in the way we function as the result of our direct knowledge… I shall also endeavor to illustrate the doctrine that all human symbolism, however superficial it may seem, is ultimately to be reduced to trains of this fundamental symbolic reference, trains which finally connect percepts in alternative modes of direct recognition.” (Pg. 6-7)

He explains, “It is the thesis of this work that human symbolism has its origins in the symbolic interplay between two distinct modes of direct perception of the external world. There are, in this way, two sources of information about the external world, closely connected but distinct.” (Pg. 30) He continues, “I have termed one perceptive mode ‘Presentational Immediacy,’ and the other mode ‘Causal Efficacy.’” (Pg. 31)

He states, “One part of our experience is handy, and definite in our consciousness; also it is easy to reproduce at will. The other type of experience, however insistent, is vague, haunting, unmanageable. The former type, for all its decorative sense-experience, is barren. It displays a world concealed under an adventitious show, a show of our own bodily production. The latter type is heavy with the contact of the things gone by, which lay their grip on our immediate selves. This latter type, the mode of causal efficacy, is the experience dominating the primitive living organisms, which have a sense for the fate from which they have emerged, and for the fate towards which they go… It is a heavy, primitive experience. The former type, the presentational immediacy, is the superficial product of complexity, of subtlety…” (Pg. 43-44)

He suggests, “We enjoy the symbol, but we also penetrate to the meaning. The symbols do not create their meaning: the meaning, in the form of actual effective beings reacting upon us, exists for us in its own right. But the symbols discover this meaning for us. They discover it because, in the long course of adaptations of living organisms to their environment, nature taught their use. It developed us to that our projected sensations indicate in general those regions which are the seat of important organisms.” (Pg. 57)

He observes, “Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt degeneration: it is inherent in the very texture of human life. Language itself is a symbolism… however you reduce the functions of your government to their utmost simplicity, yet symbolism remains… Just as the feudal doctrine of a subordination of classes, reaching up to the ultimate overlord, requires its symbolism; so does the doctrine of human equality obtain its symbolism. Mankind, it seems, has to find a symbol in order to express itself. Indeed, ‘expression’ is ‘symbolism.’” (Pg. 61-62)

Later, he summarizes, “My main thesis is that a social system is kept together by the blind force of instinctive actions, and of instinctive emotions clustered around habits and prejudices. It is therefore not true that any advance in the scale of culture inevitably tends to the preservation of society… But the fact that reason too often fails does not give fair ground for the hysterical conclusion that it never succeeds. Reason can be compared to the force of gravitation, the weakest of all natural forces, but in the end the creator of suns and of stellar systems.” (Pg. 68-70)

He concludes, “The doctrine of symbolism developed in these lectures enables us to distinguish between pure instinctive action, reflex action, and symbolically conditioned action. Pure instinctive action is that functioning of an organism which is wholly analyzable in terms of those conditions laid upon its development by the settled facts of its external environment, conditions describable without any reference to its perceptive mode of presentational immediacy. This pure instinct is the response of any organism to pure causal efficacy.” (Pg. 78)

He continues, “Symbolically conditioned action is action which is thus conditioned by the analysis of the perceptive mode of causal efficacy effected by symbolic transference from the perceptive mode of presentational immediacy… Reflex action is that organic functioning which is wholly dependent on sense-presentation, unaccompanied by any analysis of causal efficacy via symbolic reference. The conscious analysis of perception is primarily concerned with the analysis of the symbolic relationship between the two perceptive modes. Thus reflex action is hindered by thought, which inevitably promotes the prominence of symbolic reference.” (Pg. 80-81)

While this is probably not one of Whitehead’s “major works,” it will be of interest to anyone studying his philosophy.

Respect, Reverence & Revision
By Peter Uys
Here Whitehead deals with perception, epistemology, Hume, Kant, Burke, instinct, emotion & action in a rather challenging read. When one examines how a society shapes its individual members to function in conformity with its needs, it emerges that the primary agency must be our vast system of inherited symbolism. Symbols evoke loyalty to vague notions that are fundamental to humanity's spiritual nature.

The author pursues the thesis that symbolism is a key factor in the way we function as a result of direct knowledge. Distinguishing 'Direct Recognition' from 'Symbolic Reference,' he shows that all symbolism may be reduced to trains of reference which connect percepts in alternative modes of direct recognition.

Immediate perception of the external world is defined as 'presentational immediacy' whilst the other purely perceptive mode of experience is 'causal efficacy'. Conceptual analysis as third mode of experience introduces analyzable components into actual things in the real world, plus abstract attributes, qualities and relations.

He identifies the flaws of Hume & Kant in their objections to the notion of the direct perception of causal efficacy. Both schools find causal efficacy to be an importation into the data, a way of thinking about or evaluating the data. Hume's assumption that time is merely the generic notion of pure succession is an example of the Fallacy of Misplaced Concreteness. Where Hume errs with time, the Kantians err with space and time.

Whitehead also neatly assesses the best and the worst of Burke's thought with reference to his writings on the American & French revolutions, showing that Burke's revulsion at the excesses of the French one played a part in his subsequent regrettable opposition to all progressive reform and his embrace of the "prejudice" concept.

In order to appreciate the function of symbolism in the life of society one must scrutinize the binding and disruptive forces at work. The advantages of social cohesion and the contrary stimulus of heterogeneity bestowed by freedom are equally important and need to be balanced. Whereas the force of instinct suppresses individuality, symbols simultaneously preserve the health of the community and the freedom of the individual. Symbolic expression preserves society by tying instinct to emotion thus assisting reason to dissect the particular instinct.

Symbolism makes space for the individual within society and at the same time promotes stability and an environment for co-operation between individuals. Whitehead carefully categorizes action as instinctive, reflexive and symbolically conditioned. Pure instinctive action is the response of an organism to pure causal efficacy. Reflex action is a relapse towards a more complex type of instinct by those who have experienced symbolically conditioned action.

The great process philosopher argues that symbolism needs to be constantly pruned and modified by new forms of expression. Old symbols must be remolded in accordance with changes in social structure. The rituals and ceremonies associated with symbolic concepts tend to remain unchanged or become frozen in time while their interpretations are in constant flux. When instinct is not expressed, it becomes toxic as it festers underground, unknown and unexamined by the the force of reason.

Linguistic change is a good example; new words appear, old ones fall into disuse and others undergo shifts of meaning. Language is a living process built on layers of dead metaphor. Sounds and expressions participate in this process of change so in a way, expression is symbolism. A language unites a nation whilst permitting individual opinion including those contrary to the consensus.

Symbolic transference may involve arbitrary and malevolent attributions. Whitehead's analysis reminded me of Chantal Delsol's observation on the current intellectual climate in Europe. Without a sense of purpose, mankind embraces the fatuous as revealed in banal and clichd discourse. Delsol calls it the "clandestine" ideology of our time, overt ideology having become taboo. This black market substitute is sickly sentimental, arbitrary and intolerant despite furious claims to the contrary.

With reference to the band Rammstein whose act is a particularly grotesque example of what Delsol terms "black market nationalism," Claire Berlinski reveals what the repression of profound instincts leads to. This brilliant analysis, simultaneously hilarious and horrifying, encompasses translations of their lyrics, their use of Leni Riefenstahl footage, their album cover imagery, videos of their songs and the nature of their live performances.

As a community changes, rules and cultural norms need to be revised in the light of reason. When old symbolic systems are rapidly discarded as in the case of the 20th century's secular salvationist ideologies or "isms", violent revolution, oppression and mass murder ensue. Stagnation which leads to regression brings about the same toxic fruits of tyranny and terror that we are witnessing today in the Jihad.

Both rigidity and disruption lead to human sacrifice. Preserving a free society thus requires respect for tradition combined with the constant reappraisal and revision of symbolic codes. Michael Polanyi's view of the role of tradition in his little classic Science, Faith and Society is quite enlightening in this regard. I also recommend Eric Hoffer's The True Believer, a seminal study of the nature of mass movements.

Review
"Brush argues clearly, concisely and convincingly that science has its limitations. Brush does not attack science or disprove science. In fact, he affirms the great value of science. But, Brush points out that science is unable to answer life's ultimate questions: 'Why am I here?' . . . .The Limitations of Scientific Truth will assist the believer to properly understand the value and role of modern science." (Chris Reeves Book Marks 2006-09-01)

"Brush seeks to eliminate the fear of science for the Christian, and instead to offer the alternative perspective of science as a tool. He makes a great case for scientific value while noting that science does not provide absolute truth, is not superior truth, and should not dictate doctrine. There is something for everyone in this book. It's a great study book, a challenging read, and a perfect resource for discussion and detail." (Carolyn R. Scheidies Author's Choice Reviews 2006-01-03)

Brush has given us a primer on scientific data from astronomy, to biology, to quantum theory, to cosmology, and other areas. His book is a wonderful resource to have at one's fingertips. He has also given to me, a new assurance, a stronger affirmation that the Word of God is with us to assist into the journey of absolute truth as no other evidence can. Science and philosophy can assist us on the journey, but it is only the Word of God that can truly bring us to the absolute truth: God is found in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit of the Living God. Do we need to fear science and philosophy? No! When it is understood that they are tools, and servants of God to help us to know truth, then there is nothing to fear. Christians need to remember, all truth is truth from God, no matter where that truth is found. Thus, we are liberated. Science is not a threat to our faith, because the evidence shows that science cannot produce absolute. truth. I hope that Brush's book is well received and that the word is spread about this work. It is truly worth the reading and the sharing and the confidence that will grow in the believer's life from spending time with this marvelous work. (G. Edward Wishart Ashland Theological Journal 2006 2007-03-01)

From the Back Cover

“Science is a process of searching for the truth, and there are few things more certain in science than the fact that as the process continues, current theories will be revised and eventually abandoned in favor of new theories.”

—From the Preface

The “sky is the limit” achievements of science are mind-boggling, impressive, and, for many, seem to be convincing proof that science is the final authority—even over biblical truth. Many Christians, secretly concerned that it knows something we don’t, find the claims of science unsettling.

In this clear, thoughtful book, scientist Nigel Brush confronts these fears with an evaluative look at science’s limitations—temporal, logical, cultural, spatial, and empirical—and develops a more realistic model of what kind of “truth” science can legitimately provide. While affirming its great value, Brush exposes science’s shifting foundations and its inability to answer life’s ultimate question: why am I here? Only the Bible can answer metaphysical questions like this with reliable, unchanging truth.

“This is a long overdue check on contemporary scientism which put unfounded fear into Christians who often struggle unnecessarily to reconcile their faith with the changing science of the day.”

—Norman Geisler
President, Southern Evangelical Seminary

“In a concise and direct manner, archeologist-anthropologist Nigel Brush has effectively removed the underpinnings from the widespread belief that the natural sciences provide the only legitimate avenue to ultimate truth. . . . Christians who read the book will overcome the fear that Christian faith will somehow be discredited by the next scientific discovery.”

—Davis A. Young
Emeritus, Professor of Geology, Calvin College

Nigel Brush (Ph.D., UCLA) is an assistant professor of geology at Ashland University in Ohio. A committed Christian and scientist, he has conducted archaeological, geological, and environmental fieldwork in England, Canada, New York, Ohio, and California.

Finally!
By LKayH
I haven't quite finished this book, but I've read enough to be excited about it, and I wanted to post my review before Christmas. If you're looking for the perfect gift for someone who is interested in both science and religion, this may be it.

As someone who has been in turns confused and frustrated by the often needlessly polarized debate between science and religion, I can barely express my gratitude to Dr. Nigel Brush for finally giving us a book that looks at both fields with objectivity and honesty. Christians are often deeply distressed when individuals in the scientific fields falsely claim that science has disproven the teaching of the Bible, and even the existence of God. Dr. Brush exposes why science is actually not qualified to make such pronouncements. Moreover, scientific truth is a moving target; the "facts" tend to change as more information is discovered and examined. But no more can religion replace or disprove the truths that science is uniquely qualified to explore, and any study of Christian history will reveal that certain supposed Scriptural truths have also turned out to be a manefestation of flawed interpretation.

Despite the profound biases and dogmatism that can be found on both sides of this debate, Dr. Brush proposes a detente of sorts, which would recognize the advantages and limitations of both religion and science. Ideally, we should be able to benefit from the truths that are found in each field without the fear and polarization that currently limit both sides. It's refreshing to encounter a thoughtful, well-written book that helps us to do just that.

Come now. Let us reason together.
By P. Zubel
If you're looking for a book that proves science is bunk, this book is not it. Far from indicting science, the author, Nigel Brush, is himself a scientist-and a Christian. Nor is Limitations an attempt to reconcile science and religion. Such attempts, as Brush explains, have, in fact, failed.

Rather, Limitations is more like an invitation: "Come now. Let us reason together." The book lauds the accomplishments of science, but in logical, organized, and well-documented arguments, educates the reader about the six areas in which science faces obstacles in arriving at ultimate truth. Limitations informs the reader why science has failed to answer the ultimate question, "What is the purpose and meaning of life?"

Because this book assumes the existence of a Creator, some might assume it is anti-intellectual. Hardly. The text, while scaled to the lay-reader, at times offers weighty reading, especially in its discussion of the history of science as well as scientific concepts. Illustrations on pages 148 and 150 help to clarify the electromagnetic spectrum and Planck' quanta, but these terms alone give you a clue that this is not a book to breeze through over a few evenings before bedtime.

Limitations offers a serious investigation into what science has to say about topics from the birth of the universe to the elemental building blocks of life. I found a particular discussion starting about page 150 through155 to be startling. Science in its investigation of the microuniverse has discovered something quite amazing. The properties of subatomic particles may bring to some readers' minds, as it did to mine, the character and attributes of deity!

Thought provoking and profound; hard to put down
By Dale R. Meade
This excellent book stands alone in that it neither attacks the genre of science nor does it resort to polemics of some in the religious field in considering the issue of ultimate truth. Instead this book is a rather perspicacious analysis which honestly ponders the great accomplishments of science together with the limitations of the methodology and the cultural nature of the interpretations which are used to give meaning to the observable facts.

Limitations of Scientific Truth is a thoughtful book that points out the detrimental nature of a far too common tendency towards excess and overstatement by some in both fields; that of science and of religion. As a Christian and a scientist, Dr. Brush encourages both extremes to tone down the rhetoric and to honestly consider the value that each body of knowledge has to offer. He could well be considered an apt apologist and faithful friend by each side of the debate.

As an educator, I took notice that Dr. Brush succintly points out that the constantly changing "truth" offered in science should at very least give us pause. In one class I took the textbook was updated every year with no buyback because the text used the previous year was already outdated and considered too flawed for the current course. The "science" I learned many years ago in high school is now considered an embarrassing chapter in ancient history by the science of today. Something that is in such a constant state of flux must be presented with the humbling realization that there are significant limitations to the "truth" discovered and presented by science, just as there are serious limitations to the "truth" presented in personal and cultural interpretations of religious truth.

In the area of my own expertise, Intercultural Studies, Dr. Brush makes an excellent point in calling attention to the cultural bias that have been formed in each person as part of his or her upbringing and academic formation. He makes an excellent point when he states that we even determine the answers we get by the very questions we ask or the means in which we structure an experiment; a fact which has humbled many in my field as the studied subject of today becomes the educated observer and emic commentator of tomorrow. Limitations of Scientific Truth is a "word to the wise" that any thoughtful individual would disregard at considerable risk, regardless of his or her field of study and interest.

In the end, Dr. Brush makes it clear that science, while having limitations, can enrich the study of religious truth, just as Biblical insight has for centuries enriched and guided the field of science. I recommend this book as a fascinating read that I am sure you will find as hard to put down as I did.
