Great text for student new to IHC

This text starts with a great explanation about antibodies and how they work. I bought this text for undergraduate and graduate students with little or no understanding about IHC concepts and methods; it was very helpful. If I had to complain about something it would be that only very sparse attention was paid to antigen unmasking and there was no protocol. I would recommend this text to anyone with no to mid-level experience with IHC. The text is very well done.

About the Author
Dr. Vasant Lad is an Ayurvedic physician who received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, (B.M.A.S.) from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and the Master of Ayurvedic Science (M.A.Sc.) from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. For 3 years he served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune, India. He also held the position of Professor of Clinical Medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years. Vasant Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Lad

I have this textbook as well as volume 1 and the minute volume 3 is released, later in the year, I will have that one too. This book is really great, straight and true Ayurveda with no "extra stuff" and all the knowledge Dr. Lad generally packs into his books. They are also easy to read which makes learning Ayurveda easier.

Essential for serious students of Ayurveda

Dr. Lad was instrumental in introducing Ayurveda to the West. Over the past three decades has immersed us in the basics of Ayurveda and, with Volume 1, 2 and 3 of his textbooks, he is walking serious students of Ayurveda ever closer to being able to understand and practice more advanced Ayurvedic concepts and techniques. He is a rare and precious gift. All three volumes of his textbooks are reflections of this and essential for serious students of Ayurveda.

Comprehensive enough

For the purpose intended (to introduce allied health students/professionals to essential pathophysiology) it is an excellent text. It isn't a book for med school, and it doesn't claim to be; it merely presents the basics in a readable fashion.

The prose is charming, making the information presented rather digestible!

The simple breakdown of "disease + description, aetiology, symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment (and prevention)" make for a work that is easily useable as a reference for an allied health worker (medical herbalist, naturopath and so on). Such a structure also aids memorisation.

I feel that sometimes this book oversimpliefies the 'general-science big picture' of content to a point at which the concept is mispresented. An example - Figure 14.9 on page 292 - insulin is shown as stick-figure claws pulling glucose (here called 'sugar') into cells. Clearly not a major gripe, but is it too much to say 'insulin acts on the cell receptors opening channels which allow glucose to enter cells, thereby reducing blood glucose'?
I don't think so, given that allied health students are now put through the rigours of basic anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.

But, the negative could also be regarded as a positive, eliminating any daunting information which would otherwise be an impasse for the 'lay community'.

Side notes on developments in medicine and avenues for complementary medicine are an excellent and interesting addition to the text.

DIagrams and the available studyware program are useful too. Studyware has tests, crosswords and similar activities desgined to help students familiarise themselves with the content. Occasional videos are also available with some chapters. these, too, are excellent additions to the text.

overall, a substancial text that will be quite useful to any allied heath practitioner! Highly Recommended!

About the Author

Before writing his first book, Tom Cotter had long been involved in nearly every end of the automotive and racing industries.  From mechanic and auto salesman to heading the public relations department at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Cotter formed his own racing and automotive PR and marketing agency, Cotter Group.  The agency represented some of the largest clients in NASCAR, IndyCar/CART, drag racing and road racing.  He has written biographies of the legendary Holman-Moody race team, Tommy Ivo and Dean Jeffries, but is best known for his series of barn find books, such as Cobra in the Barn , 50 Shades of Rust and Barn Find Road Trip.  Cotter appears in the Barn Find Hunter video series, which is distributed by Hagerty Insurance.  He teaches public relations at Belmont Abbey College, sits on the advisory board of McPherson College’s Auto Restoration program, and is a member of the Road Racing Driver’s Club (RRDC.)  He is married to Pat, has one son, Brian, and lives in Davidson, N.C.

Michael Alan Ross has carved out a career photographing the studied nuances, latest models, adrenaline-rushed raceways, and proud owners of the car world. His love of automotive design includes an encyclopedic knowledge of sculptural engineering details with a parallel appreciation for the evolution of componentry. Michael's photography is featured in Motorbooks' Barn Find Road Trip and Rockin' Garages, as well as in a wide range of editorial and advertising in the US and Europe. He lives in San Rafael, California.

Non Fiction Book of the Month

Fascinating history of money from the ancient Greeks to today. I give this my non fiction book of the month club award..of course subjective since I'm the only one with a vote. I became interested in economics after the crash of '08 and read what was available on Kindle. I should have started here. It's written almost like a text book with a chapter review after every chapter. Easy to read and not complicated; creates a time-line of how money becomes debased, particulary paper money. Good read for everyone whether interested in economics or not. Certainly should give you something to think about. How debased can currency get? I just bought 5 6 trillion dollar Zimbabwe notes for 5 bucks, make great birthday gifts.

Brilliant Book on the History of Money

Given the title you'd think this is just another book complaining about the Federal Reserve. In reality this book is much more than that. It goes into the History of Money and how it was used in the ancient Mediterranean. There is also a lot of history of the American Revolution including why our currency has the same name as Spanish Currency as opposed to British. Not to mention the dollar was first defined in silver instead of gold.

When it comes to the History of the Depression this book really pulls ahead. You may be surprised at some of the campaign statements made by Roosevelt and the actions of Herbert Hoover. This book also has the actual acts used in the gold confiscation. I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about the economic history of the U.S.

About the Author

Peter Michael Prendergast, BMedSc, MB, BCh, BAO (Hons), MRCSI, works in private practice in aesthetic medicine. He is Medical Director of Venus Medical Beauty, a medical centre in Dublin specializing in nonsurgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Dr. Prendergast is founder and president of the European College of Aesthetic Medicine and a founding member of the Irish Association of Cosmetic Doctors. He is also a Fellow of the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Prendergast has BACD certification in botulinum toxin and dermal implants and is also an official trainer for VASER-assisted lipoplasty in Europe. �

Melvin A. Shiffman, MD, JD, FCLM, received his MD from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1957 and completed his residency in general surgery in 1964 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Long Beach, California. Since then he has been continuously involved in the practice of oncologic surgery, reconstruction, and cosmetic surgery. In 2002, Dr. Shiffman became Chair of the Section of Surgery at Tustin Hospital and Medical Center and in 2009-10 he was President of the American College of Legal Medicine. He is Editor Emeritus of the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery, a member of the International Editorial Board of the International Journal of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery, and an examiner for the International Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Shiffman is the recipient of many honors and is a Fellow of various colleges and societies.He is Chair of Section of Surgery at Newport Specialty Hospital (AKA Tustin Hospital and Medical Center) and has published more than 290 articles, edited 30 books, and written over 130 book chapters.

Manual J 8th edition, full has everything you need to do Manual J

This book has everything needed to do a manual J. I have no AC experience, especially for calculating size of system and air flow into each room, but by reading through this book and working with a spreadsheet, I was able to adequately perform a Manual J analysis sufficient to determine that my AC system is working properly, is sized properly, and the air flow in most of the rooms in the house is sufficient.

The calculations using a spreadsheet allowed me to vary factors such as max design temperatures to show me why my system was not cooling as I thought is should in 98 F temperatures. I was also able to play with different levels of insulation in the attic to see what the best R value is for the money. It is easy to see the diminshing return on investment as the R value gets sufficiently high.

What I did not care for in this book is the way it is organized. There are a number of things that are repeated over and over, chapter to chapter that are relatively easy to grasp, and then some very important items are mentioned once or twice and somewhat hidden. Also, nomenclature is not deffined very well and used in some cases without prior definition as far as I can remember. The book could be reduced many pages and be easier to follow if a lot of the simple redundancy is removed, and important items are presented more often and clearly.

An excellent reference for those interested in understanding the impact building materials choices have on HVAC system sizing. Definitely worth the money.

I used it (hard copy) in conjunction with ACCA's MJ8 spreadsheets. Doing that allows you to work with finer precision than third party software programs allow for. The latter compiled tools are of course probably better if you are totally new to Manual J concepts.

There are a lot of tables and charts that are not displayed clearly and you can't zoom in to get a better view.
It's the type of book that you need to reference other pages while reading and the kindle format does not make that easy.

Marty Brown is the author of the Power Supply Cookbook and Practical Switching Power Supply Design. He earned his amateur radio license at the age of 11 and has had electronics as a hobby throughout his life. He graduated cum laude from Drexel University in 1974. His electronic design history includes underwater acoustics with the department of the Navy, airborne weather radar design (digital and SMPS), a satellite CODEC, and process control equipment. He was previously with Motorola Semiconductor as a principle application engineer, where he defined more than eight semiconductor products in the power conversion market and received two patents. He later started his own electronics consulting firm where he designed products from satellite power systems to power-related integrated circuits for many semiconductor companies. He is presently working in the field of digitally-controlled power supplies with Microchip Technologies. He has eight children, five of whom are adopted. His wife is an internationally known writer and speaker in the area of inter-racial adoption and related issues. He presently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.
