Fundamentals of Ecology, by Eugene Odum, Gary W. Barrett

The late Eugene Odum was a pioneer in systems ecology and is credited with bringing ecosystems into the mainstream public consciousness as well as into introductory college instruction. FUNDAMENTALS OF ECOLOGY was first published in 1953 and was the vehicle Odum used to educate a wide audience about ecological science. This Fifth Edition of FUNDAMENTALS OF ECOLOGY is co-authored by Odum's protege Gary Barrett and represents the last academic text Odum produced. The text retains its classic holistic approach to ecosystem science, but incorporates and integrates an evolutionary approach as well. In keeping with a greater temporal/spatial approach to ecology, new chapters in landscape ecology, regional ecology, and global ecology have been added building on the levels-of-organization hierarchy. Also, a final chapter entitled "Statistical Thinking for Students of Ecology" provides a quantitative synthesis to the field of statistics. Contemporary and engaging, this text brings clarity and specificity to the study of ecology in the twenty-first century.

Hardly informative
By Y.A.A.
This book was in all black and white, also very incredibly surprisingly on how boring it is. It takes pages to state its points, and with reasonable knowledge you could have guessed the points they were making. This book is most likely not worth the money to anyone.

The corridor was gloomy by reason of its being on the top floor of the oldest part of the hospital, and largely unused save by the staff of the pathological department and anyone needing to visit them. One such visitor was standing there now, just where the corridor turned at a sharp angle, staring with horror at the shattered glass dish at her feet. She had been carrying it, and its grisly contents, and, believing there to be no one to impede her progress, had been running…

The person she had run into eyed the horrid mess on the floor thoughtfully. She was a tall, splendidly built girl, with dark hair twisted into an elegant chignon, a pretty face and large brown eyes.

She said calmly, 'You were running, Nurse Wells.' It wasn't an accusation, merely a statement. 'I take it that this is—was the specimen from Mrs Dodds? Do go and tell Professor van Belfeld that you have had an accident with it.'

Nurse Wells was a very junior nurse, healthily in awe of her seniors. She whispered, 'I daren't, Sister. He—he frightens me. When I dropped the forceps last week on the ward he looked at me. I know he didn't say anything but he-he just looked. Could I write him a note?'

Megan Rodner suppressed a smile. 'Well, no, I think not, Nurse.' She paused, looking at the woebegone face before her; any minute now and Nurse Wells was going to burst into a storm of tears. 'Go back to the ward, and tell Staff Nurse to give you something to do where you can pull yourself together. I'll see Professor van Belfeld and explain.'

She was rewarded with a relieved sniff and a watery smile. 'Oh, Sister, you are a dear—I'll work ever so hard.'

'Good—and don't run!'

Left alone, Megan stood for a mere moment staring down at the ruined result of several days' treatment on Mrs Dodds, who hadn't been co-operative and would be even less so now. The professor would be annoyed, hiding icy anger behind a calm face. Unlike Nurse Wells, Megan wasn't afraid of him—she rather liked him, as far as one could like a person who made no effort to be more than coldly courteous.

She walked down a small dark passage leading off the corridor and opened the door at its end. The path. lab. was a complexity of several large rooms, all occupied by white-coated workers and a vast amount of equipment; she went past them all, exchanging hellos as she went, and tapped on a door in the last of the rooms.

The professor's room was quiet after the hum of noise from the rest of the department. He was sitting at his desk, writing, a big man with wide shoulders and fair hair thickly sprinkled with grey. He said without looking up, 'Yes?'

'Sister Rodner from Queen's Ward, sir. The specimen from Mrs Dodds—'

He interrupted her, 'Ah, yes, leave it with Peters; I'll need to see it myself.' He added belatedly, 'Thank you, Sister.'

'I haven't got it,' said Megan baldly. 'The dish was—that is, it's smashed.'

He looked up then, his cold blue eyes searching her face. She studied his face as she waited for him to say something. He was a handsome man with a commanding nose and a mouth which could become thin at times. It was thin now. 'Where is it?' His voice was quiet.

'In the corridor…'

He got up, towering over her. 'Come with me, Sister, and we will take a look.' He held the door and she went past him, back through the department and out into the corridor with him at her heels, and she stood silently while he crouched down to take a close look. He got to his feet and growled something she couldn't understand—Dutch swear words, she reflected, and she could hardly blame him. 'You dropped the dish, Sister?' His voice, with its faint accent, was gently enquiring.

She looked him in the eye. 'It fell, sir.'

'Just so. And whom are you shielding behind your—er—person, Sister?'

When she didn't answer, he said, 'You are perhaps afraid to tell me?'

'Good heavens, no,' said Megan cheerfully, 'I'm not in the least afraid of you, you know.'

He said nothing to that, only gave her a frigid stare. 'Be good enough to repeat the treatment, Sister, and when it is completed kindly let me know and I will send one of the technicians to your ward to collect it.'

She smiled at him. 'Very well, sir. I'm sorry about the accident; it's kind of you not to be too annoyed.'

'Annoyed? I am extremely angry,' he told her. 'Good day to you, Sister.'

Dismissed, she walked away and he watched her go, very neat in her dark blue uniform and the muslin trifle the sisters at Regent's wore upon their heads. Only when she had reached the end of the corridor and was out of sight did he go back to his office.

Megan went back to her ward, spent a difficult fifteen minutes persuading Mrs Dodds that it was necessary to repeat the treatment once again, and then repaired to her office to drink a soothing cup of tea and wrestle with the off-duty book. She was joined presently by her senior staff nurse, Jenny Morgan.

'Nurse Wells is in the linen cupboard, tidying. She's still crying.'

'Are there enough of us on to keep her there for a bit? The list will be starting soon—you'd better take the first case up. Nurse Craig can take the next one.' She plotted out the afternoon's work and Jenny poured second cups.

'Was he furious?' she wanted to know.

'Yes, but very polite. He'll send a technician when the next specimen's ready.'

'Oh, good. No one knows anything about him, do they? Perhaps he's crossed in love.' Jenny, who was for ever falling in and out of love with various housemen, sounded sympathetic.

Megan had opened the off-duty book again, and she said indifferently, 'I dare say the man's married with half a dozen children. He might be quite nice at home.'

Jenny went away and she concentrated on the off duty, but not for long. She was going out that evening, a rather special occasion, for she was to meet Oscar's parents. She had been engaged to Oscar for six months now and this was the first time she was to meet his family. He was a medical registrar, considered to be an up-and-coming young man with a good future. He had singled her out a year or more ago and in due course he had proposed. She had had her twenty-eighth birthday a day or two before that and since he seemed devoted to her and she liked him very much, indeed was half in love with him, she had agreed to become engaged. She had had proposals before but somehow she had refused them all, aware that deep inside her was a special wish to meet a man who would sweep her off her feet and leave her in no doubt that life without him would be of no use at all, but in her sensible moments she knew that she expected too much out of life. Solid affection, a liking for the same things—those were the things which made a successful marriage. In due course, she supposed, she would become Mrs Oscar Fielding. During their engagement she had endeavoured to model herself on Oscar's ideas of womanhood; he had hinted that she was a little too extravagant—what need had she to buy so many clothes when she spent so much of her time in uniform? And shoes—did she really need to buy expensive Italian shoes? He was always very nice about it and she had done her best to please him but just once or twice lately she had wondered if she was living up to his ideals. He never allowed her to pay her share when they went out together nor had he suggested that she should save for their future, with the consequence that she had a nice little nest-egg burning a hole in her pocket. She would, she decided, have to talk to him about it. It wasn't as if she wasted her money—she bought good clothes; classical styles which didn't date, but just lately she hadn't bought anything at all, wishing to please him. Perhaps she would get the chance to talk to him that evening.

The theatre cases went up and came back, she applied herself to the running of the ward and at five o'clock handed over to Jenny.

'Going out, Sister?' asked Jenny, tidying away the report book.

'Yes, with Oscar—I'm meeting his people.'

'Have a lovely evening,' her right hand wished her. 'It's take-in tomorrow. I expect you'll go somewhere nice.'

She spoke sincerely. She liked Sister Rodner but she thought Oscar was a stuffed shirt. Not nearly good enough for the beautiful creature preparing to leave the office.

In her room, Megan inspected her wardrobe. Something suitable, but what was suitable for meeting one's future in-laws? She decided upon a crepe-de-Chine dress in a pleasing shade of azure blue, long-sleeved and high-necked, and covered it with a long loose coat in a darker blue. The coat was a very fine wool and had cost a lot of money justified by its elegance. She chose the plainest of her Italian shoes, found a handbag and gloves and went down to the hospital entrance.

He was waiting for her; he was also in deep conversation with Professor van Belfeld, who saw her first but gave no sign of having done so. Megan wasn't a girl to dither; she walked across to them and said, 'Good evening, sir' and then, 'Good evening, Oscar.'

The professor rumbled a good evening and Oscar said self-consciously, 'Oh, hello, Megan. Of course you know the professor?'

'Indeed, yes.' She gave him a smiling nod.

'Don't let me keep you,' said the professor. He sounded quite fatherly. 'I wish you a very pleasant evening.'

Oscar beamed at him. 'Oh, I'm sure of that, sir. Megan is to meet my parents for the first time.'

'Ah—delightful, I'm sure.' His chilly gaze took in the diamond ring on her finger, his face expressionless.

He watched them get into Oscar's elderly car before turning away and going to the wards.

Old Fashioned Love Story
By Nan51
Despite the stories being somewhat formulaic, there are exceptions that stand out. This is one of them. The characters are more developed and there are no villains, just realistic disappointments. The disappointment is inevitable for the real romance between Megan and the Professor to happen.
If you are not familiar with Betty Neels' novels, they are old fashioned or "straight-laced" as she puts it. But the attraction between the characters is undeniable. It's closer to Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer than modern romance writers. A close embrace and kisses is as far as it goes.
I enjoy them because you get a picture of the place, the society, the food and fashions. Not just boy meets girl. But they are feel good stories and this one is among my favorites. The romance is very sweet.

I loved it!
By Mandy
Megan's life is perfect she's engaged to a young doctor, she enjoys her job working as a nurse, and she recently acquired a flat of her own away from the other nurses. Yet everything changes on the trip home to introduce her family to her fiance Oscar. He falls head over heels in love with her shy younger sister. At first Megan just assumes he's being nice spending time with her family but when the truth comes out she finds she's not as disappointed by the news as she thought. Her heart is cracked but not broken like any other women who had found out her fiance had fallen in love with another woman.

Megan has the attention of Professor Jake van Belfield a pathology professor she just doesn't realize that he's in love with her. After all he's a little older quiet, a successful professor what would he see in her. As the professor goes out of his way to visit her, even offering her a chance to work in Holland at an orphanage giving her a much needed change. Megan sees the professor as being very kind and helpful but her mother is sure that he's in love with her daughter. Will Megan figure out the truth?

I love Megan she's a strong character not your typical skinny blonde but a real woman with curves. She's a nurse working in a tough hospital but doesn't let the laundry guy get the best of her. Even after her engagement ends she handles it better than most. Who doesn't love a knight in shiny Rolls Royce rolling into save the day. I love the professor he's just so dreamy and he cares dearly for Megan it's so sweet.

I've been a fan of Betty Neels since I was a teenager thanks to my grandmother leaving me a few boxes of books when she passed away. She left me a good 40 of her books all of which I've read before long ago. When I needed a rich character the first to come to mind are the men of Betty Neels books, the girl are always poorer struggling type. They feel like real characters that get a happy ever after. The Quiet Professor is a Harlequin so it's a fast paced quick sweet romance novel. These books always make me crave toast and tea it's because of them I've become such a tea drinker. Anyway I love the characters, love the sweet unsuspecting romance and just love all of her books. These are perfect for a quick afternoon read. Of course I plan to read this as well as the rest of her books again.

I LOVED this Professor and loved the book
By Maryann Anderson
Megan Rodner was engaged (sort of) to Dr. Oscar Fielding. He had given her an engagement ring but she had never been able to get him to be very specific about WHEN they were going to get married. He just said that they would get married --someday. Oscar had been scheduled to come over to Megan's house for dinner and she had spent hours preparing a special meal for him. Then a few minutes after he was due to arrive at her apartment and after dinner was already on the table, he called her and told her that he couldn't make it because he had decided to attend a party with some of his buddies. Professor Jake van Belfeld, who worked with Megan at the hospital, happened to come by her apartment and saw the special dinner Megan had prepared and saw that Megan was crying because Oscar had found something he would rather do. Jake asked if he would do as a stand-in so he stayed and had dinner with her and helped to cheer her up.

The first time Megan took Oscar home to meet her parents and her brother and sister, he and her sister fell in love and Megan was dropped so Oscar could be with Melanie. Megan seemed to take this in stride (she IS from England) but I was outraged on her behalf. I was also relieved when Megan actually had a few crying jags over losing Oscar. I would hate to think she would cry over his not coming over for dinner but would not cry when he dumped her for her sister! Obviously it all turned out to be positive because after being dumped by Oscar, she was free to fall in love with Jake.

Names of the hero and heroine in some of the Betty Neels books I have read were Eleanor and Fulk, Esmeralda and Thimo, Emmy (not so bad) and Ruerd, Charity (also not so bad) and Tyco, Beatrice and Gijs, James (fine) and Clotilde. I'm not saying there is anything actually wrong with the other names but they are names that are not heard in this country and were so foreign to me that I had absolutely no idea how to go about pronouncing them. Imagine my relief when I started reading this book and discovered that the main characters were Megan and Jake!

I have read probably 30 or 40 books by Betty Neels and in some of them it takes me a little while to warm up to the hero and in a few of them I NEVER end up liking the hero. However, in this book, I fell in love with Jake from his very first appearance in the book. This is another book by Betty Neels that I loved and is a book that I highly recommend.

Amazon.com Review
TCP/IP for Dummies is for anyone who wants to explore what really makes the Web tick. In a lighthearted style, the authors explain the basics of TCP/IP and other technologies. They discuss what TCP/IP can do in the context of various types of networks such as LANs and WANs and briefly introduce the reader to concepts such as firewalls and client/server applications.

The book continues with tutorials on SMTP--the standard mail protocol of the Net--and other bedrock protocols such as FTP, Telnet, and DNS in easy-to-understand language that demystifies the oodles of acronyms. Information follows on how IP addresses, IPv6, dial-up networking, and thin clients work.

In the Part of Tens section--a hallmark of the Dummies series--the authors go wild with lists such as Ten Reasons to use TCP/IP, Ten Frequently Asked Questions about TCP/IP, and Ten RFCs Worth Tasting. If you want to leave the safe world of your browser to go down the technical route, TCP/IP for Dummies offers an easy read and an informative presentation. --Stephen W. Plain

Review
'Practical Neuropsychological Rehabilitation in Acquired Brain Injury sets out to "provide a realistic, straightforward and useable guide for ordinary clinicians". It succeeds. The mark of a good book is one that you know you will come back to time and time again, and this is just such a book. It avoids the trap of trying to be a "how-to-do-it" book, but is nevertheless full of sensible practical advice on how to address the many and varied consequences of brain injury. There are nuggets of clinical wisdom throughout that will reassure clinicians new to neuropsychological rehabilitation, as well as those longer in the tooth, that it is possible to make a difference with people facing the challenges of adjusting to the consequences of brain injury. The book is also realistic, recognising, discussing and offering advice on the challenges of assessment, formulation and intervention with people who often live in complex, difficult social circumstances. It is a very personal book - one gets a clear sense of the clinician writing each chapter, the services they work in and the people presented in the case examples that are used throughout. This is perhaps best reflected in the illustration of several different approaches to formulating the same case, including CBT, neuropsychoanalytic, narrative, systemic, and cognitive analytic therapy approaches. The range of topics covered in the book is wide, but again reflecting everyday life for people with brain injury and the clinicians working with them - relationships, parenting, driving, capacity to make decisions, using new technologies in creative interventions, service models, managing services and how to keep up with Continuing Professional Development being just a few. These are the things that people in neuropsychological rehabilitation need to know, but are often not covered in other books. This book does what it says on the tin!'- Jonathan Evans, Professor of Applied Neuropsychology, University of Glasgow'Neurorehabilitation services in the UK have undergone major developments in scope and diversity in the last two decades. Improved recognition of the needs of those who have suffered brain injury, together with better understanding of its effects and a broadening of the range of treatment methods and perspectives, mean that neurorehabilitation is no longer just the preserve of a few specialised units but is available throughout the UK. The need for services continues to far outstrip available resources, but at least there is now some reason to expect or demand local brain injury services. This book provides a much-needed perspective on the practicalities of working with people who have suffered brain injury, and with their families. The diversity of treatment methods now available is well illustrated by the chapter on therapy and engagement, illustrating the use of different therapeutic approaches to the same case. The chapter on neuropsychological assessment deals with the context, ethics and impact on relationships of testing, as well as practical aspects of psychometric and observational assessment - a welcome addition. The breadth of the book can be gauged by the inclusion of chapters on driving, vocational rehabilitation, and the use of emails and texts in psychological therapy after brain injury. The vital issue of relationships after brain injury is a theme throughout the book, which also includes chapters on practical ways of working with relationships and parenting. Relationships between brain injury team members and the practical aspects of setting up a brain injury team are also (unusually) given explicit consideration. The authors and context of this book are UK-based, but the ideas and approaches in it will travel widely. The editors have done an excellent job in fulfilling their intention of providing a vibrant and practical guide to those working with Acquired Brain Injury, be they beginners or veterans like this reviewer.'- Dr Richard Warburg, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist'An excellent book written by practitioners for practitioners, blending theoretical insight, clinical experience and pragmatism. Gavin Newby and colleagues have produced a working manual for neuropsychologists in rehabilitation that deserves to be widely read throughout the profession.'- Dr Andrew Worthington, Director/Consultant in Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation, Headwise, Birmingham

Parmenides of Elea: A Verse Translation with Interpretative Essays and Commentary to the Text (Contributions in Philosophy,), by Martin J.

Martin J. Henn's Parmenides of Elea offers to the reader a reinvigorating verse translation of the Diels and Kranz B-Fragments of Parmenides cast in rhyming couplet iambic pentameter. Placing Parmenides in his proper historical context by taking seriously the impact of Persian Zoroastrianism on his developing monism, Henn supplies precise interpretation of the most difficult and vexing of Parmenides's fragments, while also providing reliable philosophical analysis of the many seeming contradictions latent in the text.

The interpretive essays form a unique contribution to studies of this work, exploring such issues as the sprawling influences of Persian Zoroastrian dualism, literary parallels and contrasts with Hesiod's Theogony, and the radical antithesis between a finite linear and an infinite closed-loop model of space and time. Overall, Henn's work represents a new model for study of a key element of philosophical literature, making it a highly significant addition to the scholarship on the subject.

Oneself as Another, by Paul Ricoeur

Paul Ricoeur has been hailed as one of the most important thinkers of the century. Oneself as Another, the clearest account of his "philosophical ethics," substantiates this position and lays the groundwork for a metaphysics of morals.

Focusing on the concept of personal identity, Ricoeur develops a hermeneutics of the self that charts its epistemological path and ontological status.

From Publishers Weekly
Probing to the heart of selfhood, Ricoeur finds otherness. In this eminent thinker's theory of personhood, the self is a character-narrator of its own history, its autonomy intimately bound up with solicitude for one's neighbors and with justice for each individual. Professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, Ricoeur reads life histories as literary narratives and attempts to show how practical wisdom should flow from our intuitive moral judgments of what the good life might be like. His ethics of reciprocity and caring draws freely on the whole of Western philosophy, from Plato, Aristotle and Greek tragedy to Heidegger, language theory and John Rawls. An exciting work for specialists and advanced students, this dense, difficult treatise, which cuts across philosophy, semantics, literary theory and social science, will daunt the general reader.

From Library Journal
The central theme here is the concept of personal identity, within which Ricoeur examines three major issues: the idea of self, of identity or sameness, and of relation to that which is not self. His intention is no less than a hermeneutics of the self, and toward this end he accomplishes much. This is not reading for the philosophical novice, but those familiar with Ricoeur's writings, or those who have a thorough understanding of the concepts employed here, will find this a rich and rewarding book. Based on Ricoeur's 1986 Gifford Lectures, this is recommended for academic libraries with comprehensive programs in philosophy.

THE SELF'S MULTI-LAYERED IDENTITY
By barryb
“SELFHOOD” has a multi-layered identity consisting of: “trait-sign-model”; motivational-base-of-attestation”; “disposition”; “phronetic-stance-of-loyalty”; & “universal-narrative-work-space”. All of these layers are discussed in detail by Ricoeur; and often, with corresponding Greek concepts.

This “multi-layered-self” has as its task: the “emplotment-of-praxis-positing”. Every aspect of this “intentionality” also gets fully addressed by Ricoeur. It has its own series of: “narrative-reference”; “evaluating-historical-possibilities”; “evaluation-of-attestation”; “dianoia-of-disposition”; & then “configured-emplotment”

This “multi-layered-emplotment” has an internal inertia of “REFLEX”. It constitutes a “folding-back” upon the “multi-layered-self” with a “multi-layered-attribution”; which could be any of the following: esteem; disteem; contingency-qualifications; & “competing-posited-projects”

In other words, this undertaking was “massive”. So do not expect easy reading or easy appropriation of his ideas. Instead, expect engagement with the text, a little additional vocabulary work; and then, ultimately; a feeling of “accomplishment”, for having gone down this road with Ricoeur. Dig in and enjoy the rewarding struggle. 5 stars for this profound thinker.

Who Am I as Another? A self.
By Charles W. Murry
Without a doubt, Paul Ricoeur's "Oneself as Another" is dense and indicative of Ricoeur's expansive familiarity with myriad philosophical trajectories and traditions, from Ordinary Language Philosophy to Phenomenology to Deconstructionism, to name a few. It is this philosophical fluency, which allows Ricoeur to articulate an extensive philosophy of the self, an inquiry into the nature of the identity of the human person. Given the sections to which my inquiry is primarily confined (Studies 5-7), it goes without saying that such a review as my own can hardly do justice to this particular other, who is Ricoeur, or to the extent of his philosophy of self. I will, however, attempt to draw out what I view as essential to these sections, which necessarily presuppose that which leads up to the current issues and anticipates future ones.

The project that Ricoeur engages in is an arduous one, though it is taken for granted in everyday language. The "I" of the person in common parlance asserts itself as one who is--an ontological and unambiguous reality as real and as given as the air that "I" breaths. Ricoeur's desire is to transcend the hegemony of "I," however, and to articulate a philosophy of self where the "I" is neither the first principle, but nor is it simply another "separate further fact." In other words, Ricoeur seeks to develop a conceptualization of selfhood that is neither the conventional exalted ego identified by Descartes, nor one which is the utterly humiliated and reduced self of deconstructionist philosophy. A self conceived in the former terms exhibits god-like status and, without the support of a trusting God to ensure one is not being deceived, that god-like status (of being an ontological reality) is ultimately all that can be conceived of as certain and a solipsistic attitude of suspicion is difficult if not impossible to avoid for all that is deemed other. A self understood in terms of the latter deconstructionist thought echoes the Nietzschean assertion regarding perspectivalism where no ontological realities are to be found. Instead, only a fabricated and utterly contingent person (if it can be called such) is present, and who really amounts to not much more than a grammatical convenience and semantic fluke. In either case meaning and value meet either a nihilistic fate or a narcissistic existence. Meaning and value, perhaps, can be construed here in terms of Ricoeur's project of hermeneutical and phenomenological descriptions of oneself as another, respectively. With regard to the two fates, I understand the latter in terms of the essential turn to the subject where the self becomes first principle, the primary datum by which and through which all other reality is "given" meaning, and the former as the deconstructionist paring away at the self until nothing remains but a series of chance, albeit intrinsically neutral, events, i.e. no self as such.

Ricoeur sees in this philosophical quagmire of self a confrontation between the concept of identity as "sameness" (Latin idem) and identity as "selfhood" (Latin ipse). When approached from a foundationalist point of view, a posited ontological self threatens the possibility of diversity within and outside of that self. Any kind of change is dangerous insomuch as it threatens the sameness which constitutes that self. Ricoeur cited for example the notion of self as understood by Locke as demonstrating such a problem. For Locke, substantial identity which corresponds to the ability to identify the self-same over time, is bound up with memory, and memory becomes substantive reflection in the moment where in the end sameness prevails. Ricoeur comments that Locke's approach marks "a conceptual reversal in which the selfhood was silently substituted for sameness" (126). When approached from the point of view of deconstruction, where no substantive self is to be found (i.e. no principle of sameness which Ricoeur will refer to as permanence in time) the self is fleeting and elusive, an epiphenomenon that is traced to physical events, brute and neutral facts, which are hermeneutically vacuous. As representative of this line of thought, Ricoeur offers the example of Hume (and later Derek Parfit) whose doubt and suspicion render the verdict that the self is an illusion. Hume only finds "a diversity of experiences and no invariable expression relative to the idea of a self" when he enters "most intimately" into himself (127).

Part of the drive for this philosophy of self for Ricoeur, then, is the desire to formulate an answer to the question of selfhood that mediates between Locke's substantive sameness, which leaves no room for alterity without destroying the self that is constituted by uninterrupted continuity, and Hume's illusory self, which Hume is unable to find upon looking for it. In objection to Hume's nihilistic analysis and conclusion, Ricoeur is quick to point out that there is, indeed, "someone who claims to be unable to find anything but a datum stripped of selfhood [heat, cold, any perception in the memory]; someone who penetrates within himself, seeks and declares to have found nothing" (128). What then drives us to impose an identity on successive sense perceptions and to "assume that we possess an invariable and uninterrupted existence during the entire course of our life" to which some kind of sameness of self can be posited? (127).

This drive to impose an identity, to ask the question "Who am I?" (regardless of the answer), is the essential hinge around which Ricoeur's philosophy of self revolves because it asserts over against ontological certainty and deconstruction emptiness an agent "who" asks. Yet, this "who" who asks is always a "who" who acts; further, this self who acts is someone recognizable, reidentifiable (either by oneself or by another), and such re-cognition and re-identification only become necessary where sameness is threatened: this threat Ricoeur identifies as time. Of this Ricoeur says: "Looking back, the greatest lacuna in our earlier studies most obviously concerns the temporal dimension of the self as well as of action as such" (113). Time is an implicit dimension in action, thus identity. But what provides that essential "permanence in time" to which the self can look to as a composite whole, a singular self, and not simply a "separate further fact"? The answer to this question involves a combination of phenomenological and hermeneutical descriptions of and prescriptions for the self and the placing of selfhood in between a dialectic of idem and ipse, that is, of sameness and selfhood. This is accomplished by positing that identity is rooted in narrative. Narrative is by definition temporal. For Ricoeur, then, personal identity, the self, "can be articulated only in the temporal dimension of human existence" (113-114). Narrative becomes the mediator between description and understanding (and eventually prescription), between idem and ipse, and between the self and the other.

Ricoeur's reliance on the phenomenological tradition is evident in the very title Oneself as Another as it is throughout the work. This phrase is not simply (or only) a reference to an analogical relationship signified by "as," between oneself and other, but an indication of the project as a phenomenological endeavor from start to finish. The "I" so common in everyday language, with its conventional tie to the Cartesian tradition is bracketed in an effort to resolve paradoxes regarding identity. The self, then, is not approached as an "I," but as an experienced self--as something that constitutes substantive appearance over time.

The self as rooted in action becomes the question of "who?" acts and how actions are always interactions. The encounter time and again with such "facts" of life (i.e. actions) acquire meaning only in the context of acquired habits and acquired identifications. That is to say, our experiences are always interpreted in the context of one's previous encounters with the phenomena corresponding to the experience. This, of course, brings oneself back to the experience of that self and points to the title's deeper phenomenological presuppositions. Just as we cannot experience a "chair" as meaningful object crafted for the purpose of sitting without prior experiences with items of this type, neither can we know ourselves except through encounters with other such phenomena--a history of encounters that teach us what a self is, hence, oneself as another.

What other philosophical approaches (and theological approaches as well) have sought is substantive reference, an ontological basis for the self where the self is the starting place, the origin, the point of departure. By introducing the narrative identity (or the temporal dimension) into the constitution of the self Ricoeur has attested that the self is something which cannot be an ontological point of origin out of which everything else is known, but is rather the destination arrived at--and still only to find that the destination is not final, but is only layover. Perhaps in theological terms, the self is the "already" and the "not yet" of the person.

The difference between person and self as implied in Ricoeur's analysis is a distinction between "what" I am and "who" I am. Ricoeur's project is in the latter, but to provide an ontological basis of the self, (i.e. to avoid a deconstructionist and nihilistic spiral into nothingness), the whatness of "who I am" (idem) must remain part of this equation of identity. It is the difference between either a meon-ontological collapse into something (vis--vis the deconstructionist project) or an ontological collapse into solipsistic ego (via traditional Cartesian notions of self, or better expressed in Hume and Parfit). Narrative theory provides the mediation between the descriptive actions that constitute character and the intentional self-constancy that constitutes selfhood. The person is one who is dependent upon that other for a guiding hermeneutic and is fragile insofar as authentic selfhood is contingent upon keeping one's word.

An amazing analyst
By Lazy reviewer
Ricoeur takes up the question of self-identity in this book, and probes the relationship of sameness or personal stability to selfhood or reflexive self-narration. It extends the ideas of his earlier work, especially _Time and Narrative_. Ricoeur habitually works within the traditions of phenomenology and hermeneutics, and in this book [as in many others] is occupied in doing critique of the analytic writers on action, of Kant, and of phenomenology. He generates a stance that can uncover aporias rivaling [and as far as I know, deeper than] those found by post-structuralists, while holding that the subject is not just a discursive effect and is more profoundly ethical. His critical foci seem oddly chosen, since the more obvious scholars for critique would be Heidegger and Levinas, neither of whom is really central to his argument. Perhaps he was influenced by the fact that this book is an elaboration on the Edinburgh Lectures, which might naturally focus on analytic philosophy, and perhaps he is trying, as usual, to find grounds for mediating rival traditions and retaining what is valuable in each.

Ricoeur is worth study because of his conscientious and constructive critiques. His turns of thought are persuasive, impressive, and valuable even to readers who are not professional philosophers of any stripe [such as myself]. The book is difficult but pretty accessible.
