Rosenberg has written about an arcane area of finance, and the book reads like a good suspense novel. The "winners" of the subtitle are the investors themselves, the "losers" the shareholders (and usually management) of the original company and, more often than not, the American taxpayer. Recommended for academic and public libraries holding James B. Stewart's Den of Thieves ( LJ 10/1/91) and for readers of Stewart's book, as a glimpse into the aftermath of poor management decisions or of gorging at the financial trough.

A blue-chip rundown on the predatory Wall Streeters who incur sizable risks in hope of realizing handsome rewards--by taking big positions at a discount in the distressed debt securities of Chapter 11 casualties. A senior editor at Institutional Investor, Rosenberg chronicles the latter-day emergence of a new breed of opportunist as the takeover wars of the 80's have given way to the restructuring battles of the 90's. By her informed and instructive account, many of the high-profile enterprises that borrowed substantial amounts (e.g., in the junk-bond market and from banks) in aid of leveraged buyouts or other dubious deals soon found themselves unable to meet their debt-service obligations. Many wound up in federal bankruptcy court, where they became fair game for the money men (no women of note as yet) whom the author characterizes as ``vulture investors.'' Lineal descendants of the gentlemanly souls who patiently searched for value among the fiscal wreckage of Depression-era railroads, vulture investors are, on the anecdotal evidence of Rosenberg's text, a hard-nosed, unsentimental lot. Backed to a surprising extent by public pension money (a mainstay of the prior decade's merger mania), the loan-arrangers don't hesitate to throw their weight around and antagonize creditor committees or, if need be, judges. Excellent

I found this book to be exactly what I hoped for. I like to read business stories. The author's goal was to teach the reader about investing in bankrupt companies and the method used was with detailed narratives of past deals. This was perfect for what I wanted.
The book went into great detail about the hierarchy of security claims and how they work in bankruptcy. The examples showed how the investor classes work with and against each other in bankruptcy and the roles the b/k judge and attorneys played. With many different narratives the reader is able to see different outcomes and the extreme risks and rewards involved in this type investing.
The book's main focus was on the personalities involved in buying distressed debt and then trying to influence the b/k process mainly through the courts but sometimes in prepackaged b/ks.
In summary, I learned a lot and enjoyed the stories also. The only caveat I would have is that the book was originally written in the early 90s so there are not new examples although the author did give summary updates on the companies and investors up through 1998.

Not for the faint of heart

The book covers the practice of investing in the securities of distressed/bankrupt companies. Topics include: investing in distressed debt; the reorganization process under Chapter 11; the contests for control between conflicting classes/interests in the reorganization process.
But, the book doesn't cover these topics in mere textbook fashion. Rather, it introduces us to some of the most famous vulture investors of all time and provides exciting narratives of their significant investment successes and failures. The cast of characters is fascinating. One ends up with a very good feel for the type of personality needed to work in this field: financial/legal wizard who combines the ferocity and tenacity of a wolverine with the haggling skills of a hat merchant from the garment district.
One of the most famous of the vulture investors is Marty Whitman, whose book "Value Investing: A Balanced Approach" forms an invaluable companion text to this book. "Value Investing" provides the theoretical underpinnings; "Vulture Investors" shows the theories in action.

This book provides the reader with an excellent introduction into the various strategies and techniques that "special situation" investors apply when seeking to profit from distrssed companies.
The author engages the reader in a story book fashion with actual bankruptcy stories, the cast of characters, investment philosophies/strategies and lessons to be learned.
The author also sprinkles in bankruptcy laws and procedures for those who are not as conversant in the field.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in profiting from distressed companies.

Forensic science is no different from any other scientific discipline; its growth and vitality are inextricably linked to the continuous accumulation of knowledge through discovery and experience. Science builds on past accomplishments; its rate of progress is measured by the caliber of published data and results. The first edition of Forensic Science Handbook was published in 1982. This book eventually grew into the current three-volume series. The three Handbooks have proven to be widely circulated professional reference books, as well as standard textbooks for graduate courses in forensic science. For the foreseeable future, the Handbooks will remain a three-volume collection. For the most part, the subjects to be found in this second edition of Volume I remain the same as in the first edition, but with an updated content. There are three books in this series. Volume One deals with the following topics; Legal Aspects of Forensic Science, Forensic Applications of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography and Capillary Electrophoresis, Forensic Applications of Mass Spectrometry, Forensic Glass Comparisons, Foundations of Forensic Microscopy, Visible Microscopical Spectrophotometry in the Forensic Sciences, The Forensic Identification and Association of Human Hair, Forensic Paint Examination, Arson and Explosive Investigation, Modern Forensic Biology, Forensic Examination of Soil, The Determination of Alcohol in Blood and Breath, and Questioned Document Examination.

Dr. Saferstein has done a wonderful job of getting well respected scientists to write each section. These handbooks should be required by any forensic science program.

About the Author
Sanford Friedenthal is an MBSE Consultant. He has been an advocate for model-based systems engineering and a leader of the industry team that developed SysML from its inception through its adoption by the OMG.

Alan Moore is an Architecture Modeling Specialist at The MathWorks. He has extensive experience in the development of real-time and object-oriented methodologies and their application. Alan was co-chair of the OMG's Real-time Analysis and Design Working Group and served as the language architect during the development of SysML.

Rick Steiner is an independent consultant focusing on pragmatic application of systems engineering modeling techniques. He culminated his 29 year career at Raytheon as an Engineering Fellow, Raytheon Certified Architect and INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP).

Mr. Steiner has been an advocate, consultant, and instructor of model driven systems development for over 20 years. He has served as chief engineer, architect, or lead system modeler for several large scale electronics programs, incorporating the practical application of the OOSEM methodology and generation of Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) artifacts from complex system models.

Mr. Steiner has been a key contributor to both the original requirements for SysML and the development of SysML specification. While his main technical contribution has been in the area of allocations, requirements, and the sample problem, Mr. Steiner has also served as co-chair of the SysML Revision Task Force (RTF). He continues to provide frequent tutorials and workshops on SysML and model driven engineering topics at INCOSE events, NDIA conferences, and other corporate engagements.

Helpful book on a worthy subject

This was a well-written and informative book. I'm very comfortable with the UML, which has a large overlap with SysML, so the language was easy to pick up. This book was also a moderately entertaining read, in the sense that the examples used were uncommon, given my background in business computer systems; example systems included an automotive sub-system, a water distiller system, as well as surveillance and security systems. I can't even count the number of times I have read texts where the illustrative example was either an account (e.g. bank account) or retail system. Not only did these examples keep the presentation fresh, they really showed off the advantages of SysML.

My purpose in reading this book was essentially to learn what SysML was, why there was a need for it (when we already have UML), and, to a lesser extent, look at an example of a language defined via UML profile. From the Business Analyst perspective, what I found was surprisingly useful.

First, SysML doesn't bother to re-invent the UML. This is an advantage of defining a language by extension. A useful subset of UML is incorporated, mostly as is. To this, SysML adds some missing by essential properties and elements. For example SysML adds support for parametric modeling, so, with the proper tool support, simulations can validate that design options will satisfy constraints.

Most importantly (from a BA perspective), Requirements are added as first-class elements of the model. SysML adds notation for relationships to Requirements, such as containment, satisfaction, and verification. The SysML abstract syntax is as good a starting point for maintaining requirements traceability as I have seen.

This book will prove useful to many types of readers. Obviously those involved in traditional System Engineering projects (airplane design, weapons systems, etc.) will find this a valuable introduction/referance on SysML. Systems modeling is often widely applied, but in an ad hoc fashion, so I would also encourage those in various disciplines to check this book out; SysML could potentially foster cross-disciplinary understanding, but it certainly could inform readers from various systems sub-disciplines (Biology, Geology, Sociology, etc.) of best practices for modelers.

Finally I recommend this book to those within my own field of Business Analysis. Although UML is suficient for modeling many parts of the systems we analyze, it fails to capture some elements of our domain, most notably Requirements. I also have supplemented the UML in my own practice with Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs), especially for defining project scope (the context diagram). This book is the first that I have seen to present a credible alternative notation for this usage, the Internal Block Diagram.

A practical guide it is!

Unlike another book I was also using, this one truly is practical. SySML being a subset of UML, there aren't many books available on this subject. This one is clear, concise and easy to follow. I just wish I'd bought the Kindle version for portability.

Excellent reference, poor learning guide

This book is the encyclopedia of SysML. It is an excellent reference if you already know what MBD/MBSE is about and what SysML is. That having been said, if you are looking to learn SysML, this book is not presented in a manner that is easily approachable or digestible to a novice who is not already practiced in the art.

A twisted tale of intolerance, a lesson to be learned in it for all.

One of the things I love about reading Conrad is that his books and short stories always leave me pondering the human condition. As a student of psychology, this story was intriguing in its twists and turns as it demonstrated the failings of prejudice.

About the Author

Christine Macintyre, formerly a Fellow and Senior Lecturer at Moray House School of Education at the University of Edinburgh, is currently engaged in supporting the development of 'The Child's Journey' in Kirklees and providing guidelines for teachers of children with special needs in Kuwait. She does consultancy work at home and abroad on all aspects of children's development, particularly in the early years.
