About the Author
Charlie Loram has never found being indoors easy. After breaking in his boots on the fells and crags of Snowdonia, northern England and the Scottish Highlands his nomadic tendencies took him to the Himalaya. For five years he wandered the high trails as guidebook writer, wilderness guide and modern-day pilgrim. His experiences there continue to inspire his attempts at living with simplicity and sustainability at home on Dartmoor, England. He is the author of the West Highland Way, also from Trailblazer and now works as series editor for their expanding hiking series. Jim Manthorpe updated this third edition. A dedicated hiker with wide experience of trekking in both Europe and Asia, he taught English in Barcelona for three years before moving back to London where he works in Stanfords, the London travel bookshop. He is the author of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, also from Trailblazer.

Oldie but goodie for trekking (hiking with homestays) in Ladakh

This book is too old to depend 100% on, but it is very well-written. You need to use it in tandem with a current map and book so that you have current settlement locations, current trail routes, current conditions of bridges, etc. The government is blasting in new roads pretty quickly, and new homestay locations are being constructed, so even something 2-3 years old has to be taken with some salt. Even if there weren't all this rapid intentional change, landslides can alter routes pretty much instantaneously so you'll need to confirm your plans with up-to-date local knowledge.

I used the book in tandem with the slicker, newer book by Radek Kucharski and this map: http://www.amazon.com/Ladakh-Zanskar-Trekking-Map/dp/8190327097. Hoteliers and other trekkers in cafes were eagerly looking over my shoulder at the combination.

If the book gets a fourth edition, I'm sure it would get five stars from me, but I can't give something that has grown out-of-date five stars.

BTW, the only thing I actually carried on the trail was the map. The books stayed in a duffel back at the hotel while I was out trekking.

I'm kind of surprised a ten-year-old book is in such demand as to be commanding almost $40 used.

"Edgar & Ellen Under Town" can keep you occupied for hours! These humorous twins scrape up more terror in a new book! This interesting book keeps you up for hours. Edgar and Ellen have more zany ideas than ever. For example, they make catapults and giant windmills. This book kept me up for a very long time. Also, this book uses more difficult vocabulary than the average kid's book. I know this because they use words such as "cacophony" and "shoddy." These words have improved my vocabulary. Another thing is that this book is very funny. This book resembles the show "Seinfeld" with all the cruelness and hatred done in a humorous way! I laughed out loud many times as I read. I recommend this book to people who like a barrel of fun!!!!

Fun, fast, intelligent

This is a great book that had lots of action, some interesting ideas and a novel magical system. It's written more in the style of a Light Novel (Japanese young-adult fiction based on the style of their comic books) with more adult scenes and themes, which works well for the author. It doesn't get too deep into the setting, but given that the setting is 'in the middle of a monster- and weather-based apocalypse in fantasy Scandinavia', there doesn't seem to be much need for it.

The only criticism I've got is that it's a bit short - I want more!

Cannot wait for the next one

Wow. Maybe a little longer intro would've been nice, but I'd quickly forgotten about that within a few pages. Powers are actually powerful, characters are interesting, romance is plentiful but not annoying. Cannot wait for the next in the series. A lot of good Kindle books have been appearing lately, but this is definitely my favorite from the past few months.

Entertaining Trashy Romance for male gamers

I really did enjoy the book. It was well written and entertaining. I did find that I was pulled out of the story frequently to marvel at how much wish-fulfillment fantasy was packed into it.

It kinda read like a trashy romance but for male gamers rather than the assorted female audiences. I could go into detail, but really, that sentence sums it up perfectly.

Practical Experience with Organic Growing Shared

Don came across my website, [ ... ] , liked what he saw about growing more nutritionally-rich foods, and asked me to review his book. I enjoyed reading Learned by the Fencepost because it has practical tips from someone who helped get the organic movement going way back in the 1950's. Don paid attention to what happened in the field and garden, and learned from experience. He ran his own experimental trials to prove what worked.
I appreciate his promotion of the use of soft rock phosphate from Florida. I recommend that soil amendment to clients regularly, but I run a comprehensive soil analysis so I know exactly how much of each element is needed for optimal balance. Don recommends taking soil samples to the local extension office, however my side-by-side comparisons of soil analyses and recommendations from the extension "service" and from a good independent lab were vastly different. Don criticizes "the USDA and the government" for pushing the use of chemical fertilizers--and I totally agree with him. However, the extension "service" is an extension of the (corrupt)government and the information I have gotten from them is often misleading. I believe that the agriculture chemical corporations, who control government to a large extent, do not want growers to be able to grow supremely healthy crops which don't need their chemicals.
Don talks about his experience in Virginia starting his organic garden. It took him 5 years to get his soil in good enough condition to produce well. With the proper soil analyses and amendments he could have saved himself a lot of time, trouble and heartache with getting his soil to perform well. And his produce could have been more nutrient rich also.
As Don says, "Observation, logic, an inquisitive mind, and Mother Nature are valuable teachers in farming and gardening, as well as in many other aspects of our lives." Let's all keep learning and moving forward together!

Outstanding book and such a joy to read!!

What a very, very special book!! I was really excited to learn about the process that Donald used to find the very best type of farming to get the most outstanding crops. What determination he had to stick to it for several years until he found the exact formula that would produce the best vegetables and with almost no insects. That is a winning combination. I am praying that more and more large farms will adopt these methods so that more of us can purchase this wonderful produce. I have been doing a great deal of research in what foods are best for us and without a doubt, we will only benefit our bodies if we eat organic. I also am a huge believer in supplements because the produce from this new way of farming is so inferior than it was 50 years ago when Donald was doing all his own research. What a perfect stocking stuffer this would be for Christmas!

Don puts his years of gardening wisdom in this book. His real life stories draw you in - they are so interesting and he even mentions awards he has won. In addition to teaching you about what does and does not work, how to garden organically - truly organic - he gives many tips and suggestions - there are so many insights to glean from this book. I cannot wait to start my own organic garden.... inspirational and aspirational.
